What's Happening?

Following U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, 2026, the IRGC declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to most international shipping. Iran has selectively allowed passage for vessels from China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. A U.S. military campaign to reopen the strait began March 19 but has not restored normal traffic. Multiple diplomatic tracks are underway, including a 40-nation UK-led coalition and an Iran-Oman monitoring protocol. Iran's IRGC has established a "toll booth" system for vessel passage.
